How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?
Regular tire rotations are necessary if you want to get the most out of your tires and drive with peace of mind knowing that they are safe. You may be wondering how many miles to rotate tires. You’re not alone. Many drivers are not quite sure when to rotate tires. In general, your tires should be rotated between 5,000 to 7,500 miles. We dive into the details below.
When to Rotate Tires: FWD and RWD
Your drivetrain determines when to rotate tires and how to rotate them. For those with a FWD vehicle, the power is sent from the engine to the front wheels. For those with a RWD vehicle, power is sent from the engine to the rear wheels. The set of tires that receives the bulk of the engine power will wear down more rapidly, which is why tire rotations are needed. This service helps your tires wear more evenly so they last longer. Keep this information in mind:
- Rotate your tires every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. We recommend taking a look at your owner’s manual to see if there are specific recommendations from the automaker that should be followed.
- If you have a FWD vehicle, move the rear tires to the front and switch sides so that the rear right tire goes to the front left and the rear left goes to the front right. When you move the front tires back, do not swap sides.
- If you have a RWD vehicle, move the front tires directly back and switch sides when you move the back tires forward.
When to Rotate Tires: AWD
What if your vehicle has all-wheel drive? You actually may need to get your tires rotated more often. This service is typically recommended every 3,000 to 5,000 miles (or every 6 months). Once again, we recommend taking a look at your owner’s manual to see if there are more specific recommendations from the automaker. AWD owners will need to move the rear tires forward and switch sides and the front tires backward while switching sides.
