If you have been thinking about adopting the EV lifestyle, you’re in good company! Many drivers are making the switch for the environmental benefits and the advanced technology that EVs provide. If you are ready to own your first EV, we can show you how to prepare your home for an electric vehicle. Learn how to install an electric vehicle charging station at home and more in this helpful guide.

1. Choose a Charger

When it comes to electric vehicle charging batteries, the type of charger you choose plays a role in how long the process takes. For home charging, you have two main options for an electric vehicle charging station.

  • Level 1 EV charging often takes days to fully charge an electric car.
  • Level 2 EV charging often takes several hours to fully charge an electric car. Installing a Level 2 charger requires the assistance of an electrician.

2. Prep Your Garage

You will need space for an electric vehicle charging station and your EV. If you have been neglecting cleaning out your garage, now is the time to do so. Remove any clutter that would prevent the installation of your new charger.

3. Find Your Power Panel & Assess Energy Consumption

What is a power panel? The power panel distributes electricity throughout your home. It should be rated for a maximum amount of current flow measured in Amperes. If you have a newer home, you likely have a 100 Amp power panel. If you are not sure, there should be an amperage rating printed on your main circuit breaker.

When you have this information about your home’s power panel, you will then want to assess how much electrical energy you consistently use in your house. This is an important step before you install an electric vehicle charging station because you do not want to overload your electric distribution panel.

4. Hire an Electrician

As mentioned above, installing a Level 2 charger will require the assistance of an electrician. He or she will have to install a dedicated 240-volt plug or add a hardwired circuit back to the power panel. In most cases, this will cost a few hundred dollars. However, if your power panel is not sufficient, it could cost $1,000 – $3,000 to upgrade.

5. Find Your Preferred Charger and Have it Installed

Research your options and find an electric vehicle charging station that meets your needs and budget. Once you have found one that works for you, set up a time with your electrician to have it installed.
