What is Good Mileage on a Used Car?

2021 Aston Martin DB11 driving down the highway

A common question we hear at our dealerships is, “What is good mileage on a used car?” There really is no one size fits all answer to this question, as there are several factors to consider when used car shopping. In the past, avoiding vehicles with over 100,000 miles on the odometer was recommended. Now, that is not always the case. Vehicles are lasting longer than ever thanks to advances in technology, and a well-maintained vehicle with high mileage can still be an excellent investment. Learn more about shopping for the perfect used car in the guide below from Holman.

The Smart Way to Shop for a Used Car

While mileage is an important factor to consider when used car shopping, it is not the only one.

  • Usage – A car driven the same number of miles in stop-and-go traffic will wear down sooner than one that is primarily used for highway driving. If you can, learn more about the previous owner’s driving history.
  • Location – Vehicles that are mainly used in a location with a dry, warm climate undergo less stress than vehicles from areas that have a cold, wet climate.
  • Condition – Have the vehicle inspected before signing on the dotted line. Keep in mind that a vehicle that needs a little TLC can still be a great buy. However, you will need to factor the cost of maintenance into your budget.
  • Maintenance – Choose a vehicle with a well-documented and up-to-date maintenance record.

Mileage vs. Age

There is no perfect way to answer, “What is good mileage on a used car?” There are many factors. It’s important to think about how the vehicle will be used in the future. Keep in mind that the typical driver clocks about 12,000 miles per year.

A newer car with high mileage may well be a better choice than a low-mileage older car. Consider the following as you shop:

  • Vehicles that sit idle for extended amounts of time could have mechanical issues. Problems with rubber seals and gaskets can develop when a car is hardly used.
  • A vehicle with a well-documented maintenance history is preferable to one that has been neglected.
  • Vehicles with fewer miles on the odometer tend to cost more.
