EV Maintenance Tips: How to Get the Most Out of Your Electric Vehicle

2023 Toyota Prius

More and more drivers are choosing electric vehicles, and with so many benefits, it’s easy to understand their popularity. While you are likely familiar with the environmental benefits of electric vehicles, another noteworthy perk is the fact that EVs are easier to maintain. Electric vehicles typically require less routine maintenance because they have a simpler design with fewer moving parts.

What maintenance is needed for electric cars? We explore the basics of electric car service and maintenance in the guide below.

What Maintenance is Needed for Electric Cars?

What maintenance is needed for electric cars? We are happy to share EV maintenance tips with drivers who are new to the electric vehicle segment. Here are a few electric car service and maintenance tasks you don’t want to miss.

  • Tire Rotations & Wheel Alignment: Tires are an extremely important component of any vehicle, so tire care is a must regardless of what you drive. This is even more important if you drive an electric vehicle. EVs are heavier than gasoline-powered vehicles of a similar size, and this is because of their large battery packs. The heavier the vehicle, the quicker you can expect your tires to wear down. We recommend a tire rotation every 5,000 to 10,000 miles and a wheel alignment every 15,000 miles.
  • Battery Checks: While EV batteries are known for their exceptional longevity, we still recommend inspecting your battery every so often to make sure everything is functioning properly.
  • Fluid Changes: While your vehicle will no longer need an oil change, EVs still need to have other fluids added or replaced. For example, brake fluid should be replaced every three to five years. Windshield wiper fluid will likely need to be added every 5,000 to 10,000 miles.
  • Air Filter Replacement: Air filters are an easy and affordable way to keep the cabin of your vehicle free of harmful contaminants. To ensure that all of that dust and debris stays out of your vehicle, replace the air filter every two to three years. If your vehicle has a specialty filter, such as a HEPA filter, you may only have to replace it every five years or so.
