Car Tire Maintenance Schedule FAQ

Tires in an acura lot

For precision handling, safe driving, and efficient performance, your tires need to be properly maintained on a regular basis. While tires are often overlooked, they are a critical component of your vehicle. In this guide, we explore how to check tire pressure, how to measure tire tread, and more so that you can drive with confidence no matter where the road takes you.

How to Check Tire Pressure and More

On a monthly basis, we recommend performing a tire inspection. This includes checking the pressure and looking at the condition of your tires.

How to check tire pressure. Even if your vehicle features a Tire Pressure Monitoring System, we still encourage you to check tire pressure manually. Wait until your tires are “cold” to take the reading, as tire pressure can temporarily increase as you drive. Remove the valve cap from your tire and place the pressure gauge on the valve stem. Press down firmly so that the hissing sound stops and you can get your reading. Replace the cap and repeat this on all tires. Add air if needed.

What to look for in your inspection. Next, thoroughly inspect your tires for damage like cracks or gashes. Check for embedded objects like nails. Look for signs of uneven wear patterns as well. If you notice uneven wear, it could be a sign of overinflated tires, misaligned wheels, or suspension problems.

How to Measure Tire Tread

One of the easiest ways to see if your tires have enough tread is the penny test. Learn how to measure tire tread below.

  • Place your penny into a tread groove upside down.
  • Can you see the top of Lincoln’s head? If you are able to do so, your tires are below 2/32”. This means that your tires should be replaced in the very near future.
  • Repeat the penny test on all tires and in multiple locations on each tire.
